Israel–Egypt Peace Treaty in Peril?

Hosni Mubarak, former Egyptian President was ousted a year ago. Now, the group that replaces him at the helm is questioning Egypt’s 32 year old peace treaty with Israel.

No surprise here; the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) in Egypt denied on Saturday that it had assured Washington it would uphold the  1979 Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty.

The U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland stated on Thursday that the Islamist movement (MB) and their newly  formed ‘Freedom and Justice Party’, pledged to honor the peace deal with Israel.

During a press conference she said,

“Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood has assured the United States that it will abide by the various treaties signed by previous Cairo governments, including the peace deal with Israel.”

Nuland insisted that the various political parties in Egypt have offered the U.S. "good guarantees" that the peace treaty would be observed. She stressed that Washington fully expects all of Cairo´s political factions to honor the previous regime´s international agreements.

But according to Essam al-Erian, the deputy head of the Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party who spoke with the London-based Arabic newspaper Al-Hayat just last week, al-Erian said the peace accords,

“are under the responsibility of the people and state institutions, and it would not be right for anyone to speak on behalf of the Egyptian people.”

“We are not in a position to give assurances.”

Rashad al-Bayoumi, the Brotherhood’s second in command, told Al-Hayat last week that,

“the Muslim Brotherhood will not recognize Israel under any circumstances and might put the peace treaty with the Jewish state up to a referendum.”

“The Brotherhood, did not sign the peace accords… We are allowed to ask the people or the elected parliament to express their opinion on the treaty, and to find out whether it compromised the people´s freedom and sovereignty. We will take the proper legal steps in dealing with the peace deal. To me, it isn´t binding at all. The people will express their opinion on the matter.”

Now that the Muslim Brotherhood is set to dominate the legislature after winning more than a third of the votes in the last stage of elections for the Egyptian Parliament is any of this really a surprise to anyone other than the Obama administration?

Our U.S. State Department continues to listen to the MB when their credo states,

God is our objective; the Quran is our constitution, the Prophet is our leader; Jihad is our way; and death for the sake of God is the highest of our aspirations.

This is the same international Islamic terrorist organization that has given birth to the jihadist terror groups al Qaeda and Hamas and was founded solely for the goal of a second Islamic Caliphate.

According to the MB website,

The principles of the Muslim Brotherhood is including firstly the introduction of the Islamic Shari`ah as the basis controlling the affairs of state and society; and secondly work to unify Islamic countries and states, mainly among the Arab states, and liberating them from foreign imperialism.

I have written about the MB and the Egyptian takeover since before it even occurred. Last February I wrote about Obama flip flopping on his Egyptian policies and that the MB would rise to power,

The Muslim Brotherhood has been waiting for an opportunity like this for over 60 years and it is not something they are going to let slip by. Since the fall of the Ottoman Empire in 1924 and the founding of the Muslim Brotherhood only 4 years later in 1928 there has never been an opportunity such as this for a return of a Caliphate and you can bet your life the Brotherhood is working harder than any other group or government to see that this happens.

In October I explained that the Obama administration stated that the MB had nothing to do with the uprisings in Egypt and then said they were a “secular” movement,

After Mubarak of Egypt was ousted the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) stepped in.  Initially it was repeatedly claimed that the MB had nothing to do with the uprising in Egypt. We were told that it came from the “people” and they wanted freedom and democracy.

After it was obvious that MB was indeed pulling the strings of the uprisings, we were told from our own US Government, in the person of Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, that the MB was “mostly secular”.

Last April, just two months after the ouster of Mubarak, I pointed out that those in charge of Egypt were already referring to Israel as the “enemy” once again. As was then reported in Ha’aretz,

A senior Israeli Foreign Ministry official said a few senior Egyptian officials have uttered harsh statements in the past two weeks and even called Israel “the enemy.” Egyptian Finance Minister Samir Radwan, for example, referring to the possibility of Israeli investments in Egypt, said Egypt did not need investments from “the enemy.”

After denying that the MB had any hand in the uprisings, after Director of National Intelligence James Clapper stated that the MB was “mostly secular”,  Secretary of State Hillary Clinton formally recognized this terrorist organization and stated the U.S. ‘would welcome’ dialogue with Muslim Brotherhood,

“We believe, given the changing political landscape in Egypt, that it is in the interests of the United States to engage with all parties that are peaceful and committed to nonviolence, that intend to compete for the parliament and the presidency,” she told reporters in Budapest, Hungary. “And we welcome, therefore, dialogue with those Muslim Brotherhood members who wish to talk with us.”

Now we have State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland who “stressed that Washington fully expects all of Cairo´s political factions to honor the previous regime´s international agreements.”

“Fully expects”? At what point will this administration wake up to the truth?

One does not have to be an expert on Islam or the Muslim Brotherhood to know that they will never abide by any treaty with Israel.

Back on August 27, 2011 Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, reporter James Kirchick interviewed Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood leader Essam el-Erian and asked him,

“Do you believe that Israel has a right to exist as a Jewish state?”

El-Erian’s answer should make clear to anyone as to how the ‘new’ Egypt looks upon Israel and the peace treaty,

“All Jewish individuals have the right to live among Arab countries. And they lived for decades and centuries in safety in our countries. Existence of a state for Jews is against all rules of states all over the world.”

Does the current administration and the U.S. State Department not read what the people they are dealing with are saying or do they just choose to ignore it with the hopes that we can all just hold hands and sing Kumbaya?

We are now in 2012 and the so called “Arab Spring” has brought no Democracy to any Arab Nation, it has brought nothing but death and destruction to the region and put more Islamists in place.

President Assad of Syria is still killing his own people even with the Arab League of Nations monitors there. Now the Arab League chief, Nabil al-Arabi, has actually called on the head of the Palestinian terrorist group, Hamas, to help with efforts to end violence in Syria.

I’m sorry, but isn’t asking Hamas to help end violence in Syria a kin to asking Timothy McVeigh to talk to the KKK to stop hating?

When it comes to foreign policy the only thing that Obama’s “Hope and change” has brought us is “a hope for a change”.

So....what else can Obama do to convince all of us that he's the worst diplomat...surrounded by even worse diplomats.
The feelings of the Arab world will not change in our lifetime and the only way to ensure the safety of Israel is to continuously remind those idiots in Washington to be stronger with regard to the State of Israel's existence!
We cannot allow this to continue - are there any answers out there? There must be folk a lot smarter than this writer with some concrete ideas - excluding Gadi, who writes a very well researched article!

  • Soaringdove777  - Hit the voter box this year...

If all of us who beleive in the right for Israel to exit would just make it to the electoral box our vote for a President who absolutely loves Israel without the "wishi-washi" actions that we have see in Obama, something might get done for Israel!

Ever since Obama has come into office, my cousins (who have been keeping a close eye on Obama's negitiveness toward Israel and her people)have been telling me how much Obama can't stand Israel and how much Obama loves the Arabs, Muslims, and yes, even the Islamic ways...he sides with them all of the time unless he feels that he will get "cornered" and his "rating" will go down. If Obama is re-elected for another 4-year term, heaven help the U.S. because he will surely bring us down.

  • Rabbi Aryel Nachman  - The Question Remains

Since Israel was enticed into this "treaty" by the US with their promises that the US and Europe would be the guarantors, the big question is: When (not if, but when) Egypt breaks the treaty, will the US and Europe act? Will the current US administration live up to its obligations as guarantor, or will they continue to facilitate the downward spiral of confidence in the US world-wide? Will BHO finally make US commitments and guarantees worthless in the eyes of the world? And, of course, it is Israel who will be the only one to pay the price for this folly.
    Good article, Gadi.
