Email from Rabbi Nachman on Toulouse murders

I will try to keep this short (yea, right!).

Whenever I come to such moments, I go back to Torah to try and gain some understanding. The first thing that struck me was from Parshah Zachor (the Torah portion “Remember”).

Devarim (Deuteronomy) 25: 17-19: “Remember what Amalek did unto thee by the way as ye came forth out of Egypt; how he met thee by the way, and smote the hindmost of thee, all that were enfeebled in thy rear, when thou wast faint and weary; and he feared not God. Therefore it shall be, when the LORD thy God hath given thee rest from all thine enemies round about, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance to possess it, that thou shalt blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven; thou shalt not forget.

“thou shalt NOT FORGET” concludes the passage. Why? Why are we enjoined to “not forget”?

The Rabbis tell us that there is a very obvious reason we are told this, and we are to remember it for all times when Jews are being attacked in whatever lands they happen to be. What Amalek did made no sense. There was no logic to it. There was no reasoning. Therefore we must remember not to look for logic and you must not try to negotiate with them because it is useless. It would be like trying to negotiating a madman into sanity.

Many religious leaders and people will tell you that Amalek does not exist any longer; that what we are to remember is a spiritual Amalek who comes to attack our soul. This is quite wrong! It has been my opinion for a very long time that Hamas, Hezbollah, Taliban, Al Qaeda and the rest are all Amalek. They are drawn to these groups because they are of the seed of Amalek.

Who attacks the innocent and the unarmed? Who attacks from behind women and children? Who attacks for no logical reason? WHO LOOKS A CHILD IN THE EYES AND MURDERS THEM?

As we grieve for the loss of our brother and our children, we must “remember” and realize that there is no logic in the enemies of the Jews and Israel. We must stop looking for it. We must stop negotiating with it. We must cry out in a loud clear voice for the entire world to hear “NO MORE! We will no longer allow our brothers, sisters and children to be sacrificed on the pagan alter of Political Correctness!”

With that understood, this is the prayer I wrote:

Children of Amalek,

B’reshit (Genesis) 49: 9: Judah is a lion's whelp; from the prey, my son, thou art gone up. He stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as a lioness; who shall rouse him up?

Beware the lion who is backed into the corner; he is far more dangerous than the one in the brush. He will not cease his attacks against his antagonist; he will search out their weakness, and utterly destroy them.

He patrols his domain. He seeks no permission for HaShem placed him there. Only the fool and the hyena dare encroach. The hyena's gather in secret dens, and in the dark places they plot his destruction. They attack him in number; but he turns to face them. He does not seek out the weak as they do, he breaks the back of the strongest. His roar causes them to tremble and quake; his is the land, and he is submissive only unto HaShem.

He sits at the right hand of the Throne of HaShem. He guards the Throne for the righteous. His roar dispels the darkness of the nations, and those who hear his roar are drawn to HaShem. He walks through Gan Eden at the side of HaShem; in the cool of the evening they walk. He is the faithful and obedient of HaShem, and HaShem holds him as His treasure.

Oh children of Amalek, tremble and quake. HaShem is endlessly patient, but you have mistaken it for weakness. He forbade the spilling of blood in His land, and yet you have tried to bath His land in blood. You said to His people "I will replace you. I have stolen your promise. We are the people of the land" Woe to you, children of Amalek, HaShem says "I knew My people from before the world, but you I do not know! He placed the pride of Israel in the land, and none may come against them. Oh foolish children of Amalek, just as in the days of old, you preyed on the weak, the young and the old. You attacked from the rear like the thief and the robber. The cup of HaShem's wrath you have filled; by your own had did you fill it. By the laws of HaShem, your blood is on your own head.

Children of Amalek, fear! HaShem will pour out the cup of his wrath, he will let lose the lion; He will remove the fetters and restrain him no more. He will say to the lion, "Avenge the blood on My land and cleanse My land of iniquity." HaShem will wipe clean the land for all the nations to see. He will destroy Amalek from the face of the earth. The nations of the earth will fall on their face in fear and awe before the Only King!

HaShem will return the lion’s pride of His people to walk the land forever!
